About Our School

School building

Minami-Nagareyama Junior High School is in the Chiba Prefecture of Japan, just north-east of Tokyo.

In Japan, junior high school consists of grades 7, 8, and 9.

Our school has nearly 600 students. Each grade has around 200 students.

The school building is four-stories tall.

The first floor has the principal's office, teachers' office, school clinic, school library, gymnasium and such.
The second floor is for the 3rd year (9th grade) classrooms,
the third floor has the 2nd year (8th grade) classrooms,
and the fourth floor has the 1st year (7th grade) classrooms.

Lunchtime

School lunch
Lunchtime in a Japanese school is different from lunchtime at schools in Western countries.

First of all, there are no choices in the menu. The school nutrionist carefully plans a lunch menu each month that has a variety of meals that are both healthy and delicious.
All of the teachers and students in the school eat the same lunch as each other.

Also, there are no cafeterias or "lunch ladies" in Japanese schools. Lunch is eaten in the classrooms and the students serve the food to each other. They also clean up afterwards.

There are no things such as hamburgers or pizza in a Japanese school lunch.
School lunch in Japan normally consists of things such as rice, soup, salad, milk and the main course is fish, curry, or noodles.

School Uniforms

Indoor shoes
Another big difference between public schools in Japan and in Western countries is that students wear uniforms to school in Japan.

And they take off their shoes at the school entrance and change into their "indoor shoes".

In most schools, each grade is assigned a color and their indoor shoes are that color.

Our students have indoor shoes with green, yellow or blue stripes depending on their grade.

Japanese students have more than one school uniform.

There is a dress uniform. The girls' dress uniform is called 「セーラー服」 ("sailor uniform") and the boys' dress uniform is called 「学ラン」 ("gakuran").

There is also a track suit and gym clothes.

Students also carry their books to and from school in a school bag. All school books and notebooks are carried everyday; books are never left in a school locker overnight.

Pencil Cases

Also,in Japan, students come to school with many pens, pencils, erasers, scissors, glue, a ruler and other items in a pencil case.
They like to buy a pencil case with their favorite brands or characters such as Mickey Mouse or Snoopy.

Japanese school life is very different from other countries!
Thank you!
